What is PLA?

Polylactic acid (PLA) isa bioplastic made from renewable plant-based materials like corn, sugarcane, and sugar beet. It's a thermoplastic polyester that's used in packaging, 3D printing, and agriculture.

How it's made

  • Plants like corn, sugarcane, and sugar beet are fermented to produce lactic acid
  • The lactic acid is then polymerized to create PLA

Benefits

  • Biodegradable: PLA can break down into natural elements like water, carbon dioxide, and biomass in industrial composting environments
  • Eco-friendly: PLA is derived from renewable resources instead of fossil fuels
